My co-author, Amida Johns, and I cordially invite the community of Hangklip and Kleinmond to attend either [or both!] of the launches of our book about the life and flowers of the late Thomas Pearson Stokoe. Mr Stokoe was a regular visitor to Kleinmond and many of his most spectacular floral discoveries are from your area; these are comprehensively dealt with in the book.
FIRST LAUNCH – 26 September 2009 at 11h00 in Nivenia Hall, Harold Porter Botanical Gardens, Betty's Bay. Light refreshments will be available.
SECOND LAUNCH – 9 October 2009 at 20h00 for 20h30 at the MCSA Club House, 97 Hatfield Street, Cape Town. This launch is very kindly hosted by the Mountain Club of South Africa, in recognition of TP Stokoe's contribution to mountaineering.
We've spent nearly a year pursuing an irascible old Yorkshireman, T.P. Stokoe, who wandered the Cape Mountains climbing almost inaccessible highlands and collecting an amazing array of previously unknown plants. He died 50 years ago. To celebrate his life and the 30 spectacular fynbos species named after him we will soon be publishing our latest book "T.P.Stokoe the man, the myths, the flowers." With ...
• quotations from his perceptive and amusing correspondence,
• reproductions of his own quirky watercolours,
• contributions from many renowned Cape botanists,
• superb photographs of his flowers in their habitats
• an accessible and informative account of his life and achievements.
To find out more, and to order your subscription edition copy, please go to www.tpstokoe.co.za
Publication date is September 2009. Pre-order the subscriber's edition before May 31 and your name will be added to the subscriber list in the book. Your subscriber copy will be signed by both the authors and you will also receive a free CD which includes an archive of Stokoe's humorous cartoons and correspondence, most of which we were unable to fit into the book itself.
